Entry 04: Performatives and Constantives


Brief summary:

According to J.L. Austin, there are different types of statements. Those that describe and those that command. On the one hand, "constatives" are those utterances which describe something true or false; classifying them will depend on the reality assessment of the message's receptor. On the other hand, those statements that command, are called "performatives" which denote an action, this means that they inspire actions in people. As a consequence, performative utterances change the social reality they are describing. Also, I have to mention that there are words that bring about actions and words that themselves are actions; the last ones are defined as "speech acts".
A successful performative statement has to be:
- Authoritative
- Understood.
- Clear
- Able to be executed

Metacognitive Analysis

Regarding this technological tool (TED LESSONS), I have to say that I consider it very useful. I am a fan of TED talks, but I've never visited the lessons' part that this platform offers. I found some interesting videos about animals and nature to show to my cousins (they are very fond of science). The language used is quite simple, and the videos illustrate the ideas clearly. I certainly hope I can use this tool in high school someday.


About the content of this lesson, the last question of the "THINK SECTION" makes me think in a situation I experienced some years ago. I was travelling by train to Constitution Station (in a NEW ROCA TRAIN) I remember I was exhausted, so I relaxed my feet on those "railings" located at the first seats of the train. A guard came and fined me for doing that. I completely ignored the "help us to keep this train in a good state" sign, and I swear I'd already read it many times. With this, I want to say that it's true the last idea of the video: "just because a performative meets the felicity conditions and is clearly stated, it does not mean it is implicitly followed."

VIDEO 1: THE IMPORTANCE OF HEDGING Publishing a research should be thought of as making a contribution to the ongoing dialogue in your field or discipline. The focus of all research is problem-solving and collaboration and teamwork often expedite this process. The most useful contributions are made in such a way where the primary writer or researchers will receive credit for his or her unique and original contribution but will also leave room for others to add to the dialogue to build off points made earlier to refine them and reinterpret them. One way to achieve this is through the effective use of HEDGING. Definition of hedging Lakoff defined it as words whose job it is to make things more or less fuzzy.
